Why your business needs a website!

The availability and popularity of home computing and accessing the internet has grown substantially in the past decade. Today, 57% of the UK population now has access to the internet at home (13.9million households) and many more will access the internet elsewhere.

For many people looking for a service or product, the internet is the first place they turn. The internet also provides a way for people to investigate companies and their products or services without the awkwardness of face-to-face contact which allows a greater degree of anonymity while they consider their options.

In response to this most businesses now have a presence on the internet and use this as an opportunity to promote their products and services in addition to more traditional forms of advertising, such as Yellow Pages. (which by comparison costs around £300/year and offers little opportunity to really sell your business).

What makes a successful website?

• Interesting and regularly updated content
• Good-looking design in keeping with your business’ style
• Simple and predictable navigation
• Robust and responsive in operation
• Easily found by search engines like Google, Yahoo MSN search

The first of these criteria is obviously your responsibility, although I can offer advice in what has worked in other websites in which I have been involved; the others are my areas of specialism, where I have had previous success.
